If you received a traffic citation in Tiverton:

Department Policy

The goal of the department’s traffic enforcement program is to promote the safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and deliver traffic-related services designed to reduce the number of traffic accidents. The Tiverton Police Department shall enforce traffic laws in a consistent and courteous manner to foster a positive public image while providing all necessary police traffic-related services. The department shall carry out its traffic management responsibilities consistent with the requirements of the judicial, educational, administrative, and engineering agencies involved in the transportation management system. In addition, the department shall foster ongoing dialogues with other agencies to ensure that channels of communication remain open and problems are resolved as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Traffic Tickets (Citations)

Paying your RI traffic citation is an admission of guilt―even if you plead “no contest.” Other points to remember about paying your traffic citation:

  • You can pay a traffic citation online or pay by mail.
  • Some RI traffic violations are serious enough for a suspended or revoked driver’s license.
  • Depending on your driving history, you could receive a habitual offender label.
  • Your auto insurance company will probably increase your rates.
  • The judge might dismiss your traffic citation on a good driving record claim (see the Good Driving Section below).
  • Some traffic violations cannot be paid and require the operator to appear in court.

Good Driving Record Ticket Dismissal

Per Rhode Island’s “good driving record” statute, you can request the court dismiss your traffic citation based on your good driving record; if the court agrees, your traffic citation will disappear. However, you must still pay all related court costs.  Out of state drivers are typically required to bring certified copies of their driving record to their hearing.

Pleading Not Guilty

Some drivers find pleading “guilty” and paying their fines more convenient than contesting their charges; others don’t. You can enter a “not guilty” plea during your arraignment and schedule a hearing to fight your traffic case in court.

If your ticket indicates that you must appear in court, check to see if it is a Tiverton Municipal Court ticket or a Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal Ticket.
